The nation’s largest teachers union is calling for the Common Core Academic Standards in schools to be changed.

When adopted by California and a dozen other states back in 2010, the Common Core Standards were meant to instill more rigorous language, arts, and math instruction in public schools. As new lessons have rolled into classrooms nationwide, public outrage has flared often driven by distrust of the federal government’s role in promoting the standards. No state has yet pulled out but Indiana is close to doing so. Intense debate is expected this spring. National Education Association President, Dennis Van Roekel said, he believes the standards can improve education, but they will not succeed without major course correction; including the possible rewriting of some standards and revising the related tests with teacher input.
