ARCATA- Small sitkas spruce trees and willow sprigs now border the edge of Allen Pond at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. 30 volunteers helped to plant the trees on Saturday that will help protect the surrounding area and wildlife.

The plants only stand a few feet tall, but will be fully grown in only a few years. The plants are  one of the final stages of the McDaniel Slough restoration project, which is one of the largest restoration projects on Humboldt Bay.

1,500 willow sprigs and 40 sitka spruce were planted along the pond. When grown the plants will provide a natural border against the marsh and the city and provide protection to wildlife.
