Convicted felon could get over 9 years in prison

EUREKA – A convicted felon could spend substantial time incarcerated after a conviction for outstanding warrants and other weapons charges.

Last April, 23-year old Ivan Martinez Chavarin was observed during a traffic stop to be in possession of a controlled substance and armed with a weapon. A search found the felon with methamphetamine and a loaded 380-caliber handgun.

Martinez Chavarin was already on probation for two counts of domestic violence and criminal threats and two counts of unlawfully taking a vehicle.

Thursday, Judge Reinholtsen found true that Martinez Chavarin’s conviction for criminal threats a strike offense. Sentencing is scheduled for September 12. He faces a maximum sentence of over nine years in state prison.
