HUMBOLDT COUNTY- The County of Humboldt has held interactive community budget meetings with video conferencing in all five districts for the past two years. Now, the county is being honored for its innovation.
Officials confirm that Humboldt County is the only county in California that uses video conferencing technology for its community budget meetings, the last of which was held in March.
Now, the Alliance for Innovation, an international organization dedicated to improving local governmental processes, has awarded the county the “Outstanding Achievement in Local Government Innovation Award” for these interactive meetings. County officials say the new system of meetings does more than save the county resources.
"Under the old system, meetings were held individually and separate from each other, but now the meetings are broadcast and streamed live all at the same time, so no matter if you're attending a meeting in willow creek or miranda, you're going to hear the same information, hear the same questions, you're going to be able to respond. And everybody, including all of your supervisors are all going to be able to hear it," said Sean Quincey, the Public Information Specialist for the County of Humboldt.
Officials expect the Humboldt County Budget for the 2014/2015 fiscal year to be finalized by the end of June.
