Court of Appeals orders Caltrans to re-evaluate Richardson Grove proposed widening project
SOUTHERN HUMBOLT- A coalition of environmental groups along the North Coast challenged a Caltrans widening project at Richardson Grove State Park. The challenge was to California’s Court of Appeals and on Thursday was ruled in favor of.
The project called for widening 1.1 miles of Highway 101 to allow standard-sized shipping trucks to pass through. According to Caltrans the project would require excavation and paving within the root zone of nearby redwoods but environmental groups worried the project would affect old growth redwoods.
The appeals court said Caltrans will have to re-assess the impacts. The ruling overturns an earlier decision by the Humboldt County Superior Court that ruled Caltrans complied with state environmental laws.
