Court orders Caltrans to re-evaluate Richardson's Grove impact
The California Court of Appeals today ordered Caltrans to re-evaluate the environmental impacts of the highway-widening project at Richardson’s Grove State Park.
The proposed project called for widening 1.1 miles of Highway 101 to allow standard sized shipping trucks to travel through the grove. The project would require excavation and paving within the root zone of nearby redwoods and a coalition of environmental groups had challenged the report. The appeals court found that Caltrans will have to reassess the impact on ancient redwoods in Richardson’s Grove. The ruling overturns an earlier decision by the Humboldt County Superior Court that ruled Caltrans complied with state environmental laws.
