CPUC approves funding for Karuk Tribe Broadband Project
$6.6 million dollars has been approved for a new fiber optic connection in Humboldt County. On Thursday the California Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved funding for the Karuk Tribe Broadband Project. The project will install fiber optic lines from Orleans, through Weitchpec, to Orick and Big Lagoon. This will allow those residents to have access to high-speed broadband services. Currently residents can only access dial-up and satellite Internet on a limited basis.
The Karuk Tribe has been waiting on the grant to help with their $12 million dollar plan to put broadband Internet services in rural areas.
