CR track and field team to compete at NorCal Trials
The whole season has come down to this for the College of the Redwoods track and field team.
A total of seven Corsairs advanced past last week’s Golden Valley Conference championships at Shasta College to compete at Friday’s Northern California Regional Trials at De Anza College in Cupertino.
CR, which took third as a team at the GVC finale, won four different events, including the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5K race (both by Kevin McTague), the 800m (Stefvon Ellington) and the 4x4 relay (Ellington, Nick Moran, Artis Jones and Riccardo Cicciarella).
Now Redwoods head coach Reed Elmore is just hoping his team can continue improving.
“We just want to continue the upward trend,” Elmore said. “We want to carry on the energy and keep up what we’ve been doing. I think everyone has an opportunity to move on, but they know they’ve got their work cut out for them.”
McTague, who won the GVC title in the steeplechase by 1 minute and 25 seconds, nearly lapping the entire field, advances to the NorCal Finals next week at the same location automatically because there are no trials in the event.
The other Corsairs to advance to this week’s NorCal Trials individually are Jones in the 200m, Moran in the long jump, Colten Ross in the pole vault and Elizabeth Duncan in the 1,500m.
Duncan is the only female Corsair to advance past the GVC championships, while the 4x4 relay team also qualified in the 4x1 and will compete in both.
“We just want top performances from everyone,” Elmore said. “Whether they move on or not, we just want you doing your best and challenging some of these athletes from bigger schools and programs. We want to keep putting College of the Redwoods track on the map.”
Next week’s NorCal Finals will be followed by the California State Championships May 16.
