CR women's soccer falls 6-4 to Shasta
In a rainy slugfest at Community Stadium on Friday, Shasta College landed three consecutive blows in the span of 3 minutes in the first half and went on to win the Golden Valley Conference women’s soccer match at College of the Redwoods, 6-4.
After CR opened the scoring with a goal from Cynthia Smith in the 31st minute on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead, Shasta answered with three consecutive goals in the 35th, 36th and 37th minutes, adding another in the 42nd for a 4-1 lead at halftime.
“We wanted to attack today so we knew we were going to be susceptible to counters and that’s pretty much what happened,” said CR head coach J.D. Davidson about the Knights pouring on four goals in a 6-minute span. “But then we were able to regroup and turn things around.”
In the second half, after Shasta quickly struck again for a 5-1 lead just 6 minutes in, the Corsairs found their rhythm on their offensive attacks and began applying pressure as freshmen Kiana Adams and Jordan Paulsen each connected for goals to make it 5-3 with more than 15 minutes remaining in the match.
“They were just consistent with their effort and never gave up,” Davidson said. “It was great to see.”
Shasta managed an insurance goal in the 82nd minute before Smith punched through her second goal of the game in the 88th minute.
“We had some great play up front but we also had some excellent play in the back with Keely Truebe and that group,” Davidson said. “She made a ton of plays and solved a lot of difficult situations on her own.”
With the loss, the Corsairs drop to 0-4 in the GVC and 1-5 overall, and will play its next four games on the road before returning home for its season finale Nov. 4.
CR plays at Lassen on Tuesday and Shasta on Friday next week.
“Our mindset was positive, morale is high and we’re focusing on what we can control,” Davidson said. “Hopefully we can just keep building.”
