Crab gear-setting period extended
EUREKA- Governor Brown recently signed off on a new bill that would give crab fisherman more time to set their gear at the start of crab season. The existing law allows for a 36-hour gear setting period but the new bill instead will allow crab traps to be set and baited 64 hours prior to the opening date of the Dungeness Crab season.
Officials said this would modernize the California Fish and Game Commission by eliminating a number of costs. They said the bill would also authorize crab traps set in Districts 6 through 9 along the North Coast Crab fisherman say it will make California’s pre-set rules consistent with those in Oregon and Washington.
