Eureka - the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office is warning the public about a new fraud scam.
Authorities say a citizen was attempting to sell tires on Craig’s List and thought he’d made a sale at the agreed to price. The buyer agreed to make payment via personal check but overpaid. The alleged scammer advised the seller to cash the check and refund the overpayment upon transfer of the tires. The check was deemed to be fraudulent.
Officials say this is fraud and to be wary of these types of situations because ultimately it’s the person who cashes the check who gets suspected of fraud not the person who actually committed the crime. Should you become a victim, call the District Attorney’s Office immediately at: 800-962-8261.
