Deadline to file taxes looms

EUREKA- The deadline to file taxes is just over a week away and tax experts are encouraging those running late to file soon.

"It is definitely not too late," said John Fullerton a Certified Public Accountant with an office in Eureka.

Fullerton said people who haven't filed should get their paperwork into professionals because they, like him, are mostly booked. "I've been working seven days a week 12 to 14 hours a day," he said.

If people do not think they will file in time, Fullerton said they can file an extension.  "Even if you owe, you should at least file and extension," he said.

More complicated tax filers, like business owners or rental property owners, should work with a professional he said. But, simple short form paperwork can be filed themselves, he said, if they are careful with math.

Even Fullerton said he is guilty of waiting till the last minute. He said part of his tax return is filled out, and plans to finish just before deadline.  "I've been pretty busy these past ninety days," he said.

The deadline to file taxes is April 15th.
