NORTH COAST - A new designation for the Spotted Owl from “threatened” to “endangered” is being sought by an environmental group.
It comes after a ninety day study and petition from EPIC – The Environmental Protection Information Center. The new study found sufficient evidence existed that current conservation measures have not provided enough protection and that additional, more stringent and immediate measures are necessary.
The initial ninety day finding will now set in motion a twelve month period of a full status review for the Spotted Owl in order to determine if complete reclassification is warranted. The service expects to complete this twelve month review in 2017.
We reached out to the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife for comment but did not hear back.
