EUREKA- The Eureka City Council voted on Tuesday to put off destroying police records until January despite a recommendation from Chief Andy Mills.
The delay comes as a request from the attorney of Eureka Police Sergeant Adam Laird. Laird is currently in court facing allegations of an assault while on duty and then filing a false police report about the incident. Laird’s attorney is requesting all complaints from 10 years ago for the case, which is why he asked the council to postpone destroying records until the New Year. Chief Mills told News Channel 3 off camera that this is a standard procedure in accordance with the penal code. He added that he asked all records having to deal with Laird be put on file anyway, so those would not have been affected.
