Eureka Girl Scouts finalist, regional shopping bag contest
EUREKA- Three local Girl Scouts from Humboldt County are finalists in the first-ever council-wide cookie shopping bag contest held throughout northern California.
To gear up for their cookie season next February the organization is already getting a head start. The Girl Scouts of Northern California held a contest looking for original hand-drawn artwork to feature on their 2014 Girl Scout cookie reusable shopping bags. Contestants entered from five separate regions and one Eureka finalist Makayla Najera is representing her artwork for the Redwood region. Girl Scout leaders said the cookie program teaches girls five key skills, goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Her mother says Makayla's inspiration for the drawing comes from the Girl Scout’s motto, to be both a leader and a role model for the entire community.
“She loves art and once I mentioned this to her she wanted to do it. She loves princesses and castles and she wanted to draw a really big Girl Scout showing that she was really courageous and strong and that she was helping a sick princess, because Girls part of the Girl Scout’s motto is to be friendly and helpful,” said Jessica Najera.
The winner will be chosen at the end of August and if you would like to view the drawing you can visit www.girlscoutnorcal.org
