The Humboldt County Coroner's Office has identified the victim in Thursday's fatal semi-truck crash as 62-year-old Mark C. Churchill of Santa Rosa.
The California Highway Patrol said Churchill was traveling north in a semi-truck pulling a trailer on Highway 101 near the Dyerville Loop Bridge around 5 a.m. when he drifted off the road. CHP said he hit a guardrail, crashed down a hill and died on scene. It is unknown what caused Churchill to allow his vehicle to drift, but CHP is investigating.
His truck and the surrounding area caught fire and because of the crash an unknown amount of diesel fuel was spilled. Caltrans along with the National Response Center was called to assist with the hazardous waste cleanup.
An autopsy for Churchill is scheduled for Tuesday, October 29.
