Federal judge rejects environmental lawsuit against Willits bypass
WILLITS- A federal judge ruled Thursday to reject environmental groups lawsuit against the Willits bypass. The US District Court ruled in favor of Caltrans in a lawsuit that challenged construction of a highway bypass. The ruling allows Caltrans to continue building a four-lane freeway around the community of Willits. Environmental groups allege the construction has destroyed wetlands, streams, and woodlands.
The construction began in Jan. of 2013 and is considered about 30 percent complete. Caltrans says the project aims to eliminate a traffic bottleneck in the Willits area while enhancing fisheries and local wetlands.
