Feds release internal document confirming Humboldt County water rights on the Trinity River
HUMBOLDT COUNTY - The Department of the Interior has released an internal legal opinion regarding Humboldt County water rights and Congressman Jared Huffman applauds the decision.
Huffman had been calling for the release for some time. Back in 1959 after dams were put on the Trinity to create the Central Valley Water Project, 50,000 acre feet were guaranteed for downstream users by the Bureau of Reclamation. During all the squabbling over water during the drought, Huffman called on the federal government to release this opinion by the solicitor and confirm the agreement made sixty years ago.
Now that it has been done, Huffman said he looked forward to the next step in determining uses for this water and coordinating flow releases with resource agencies that will best benefit our North Coast communities.
