Fields Landing boat launch dedicated to Jimmy Smith
FIELDS LANDING- The Fields Landing boat launch facility has been dedicated to former 1st District Supervisor Jimmy Smith.
At the lauch, Wednesday's dedication ceremony was a surprise to Smith, who did not know the boat launch was named in his honor.
Smith served as supervisor from January 2001 until August 2012 and worked for 20 years to improve the boat launch. He helped to create the $1.1 million facility through grant funding with the help from numerous agencies like NOAA Fisheries and U.S. Fish and Wildlife services.
Smith was a commercial fisherman, harbor commissioner and wildlife biologist.
Supervisors, Congressman Mike Thompson and friends spoke at the dedication. They talked about his leadership and his hard work for the community. "[He's] the nicest man you'll ever meet," said 1st District Supervisor Rex Bohn.
Smith remained humble at the ceremony, crediting the completion of the project to his partners. "I'm just tickled to be a little part of it," he said.
The Board of Supervisors will officially name the facility as the Jimmy Smith Fields Landing Boat Launching Facility at their upcoming meeting on November 4.
