Flash mob held in Arcata to raise awareness for violence against women and children
ARCATA- Rain can stop some things from happening, but not violence. It also did not stop hundreds from gathering at the Arcata Plaza to raise awareness for physical and sexual violence against women and children.
Today was the second annual One Billion Rising event. It is designed to raise awareness for the violence women and children are subjected to throughout the world. As part of One Billion Rising, a flash mob was held around 2 p.m. on Friday at the Arcata Plaza. The group, which included about 100 students from Sunny Brae Middle School, danced to the song “Break the Chain” by Tena Clark and Tim Heintz. Last year, 207 countries participated in One Billion Rising. The flash mob was organized by VDay Humboldt.
"One in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That equals one billion women. One billion women being violated is an atrocity, whereas one billion women dancing is a revolution. It's a thing of beauty and of power," said Jessie Hobba, a co-organizer of the event.
