Fortuna Chamber kidnaps tourists; To spend weekend at rodeo
FORTUNA- Two tourists out of Lake Port, Calif. have been sentenced to spend a full all-expense paid weekend at the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fortuna Chamber of Commerce kidnapped the two Friday, bringing them to stand trial in front of the town.
John and Anna Mix have been ordered to accept a free local hotel stay and access to all the events at the rodeo this weekend.
"I think it's fair," said John. "We have to spend the whole weekend being pampered," said Anna.
The afternoon started with Police Chief William Dobberstein bringing the two to their jail, a cell in the back of a pickup truck. The two were then locked up and paraded through town, arriving outside the Fortuna Library Lawn. The two were then ordered to stand trial and ultimately sentenced. The two were ordered to attend the rodeo, and all the events leading up to it.
The town has been 'kidnapping' tourists for the past 20 years, as a way to treat them to everything that the town has to offer during the week long festivities.
"Our rodeo board puts in so much effort inoto making it such a great week for everyone and we just wanted to spread that to other people," said Lisa Hummel, the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce.
