FORTUNA- The Friendly City is cutting back it's hours. Starting Monday city hall will now be closed between 12 p.m. To 1 p.m. And end the day earlier 4 p.m.
"We've reached the breaking point to where we either have to hire staff or reduce services and this is actually a small reduction in services to the public," City Of Fortuna Finance Director Marie Essig said. "The window has been open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. everyday so by reducing access to the public two hours everyday that allowed us to reassign staff without the funds to hire additional staff."
The city says because the budget is so tight, they were left with no choice. Staff currently processes more than $4,600 water and sewer customer's payments. Those paid in person must be entered manually. The cut in hours will save Fortuna nearly $20,000 per year and allow staff more time to devote to processing those payments and other work tasks.
If you do need to make a payment outside of business hours. There is a drop box outside and inside the building. However, the city is encouraging online payments through their website to help alleviate the burden.
