FORTUNA- It was the recess students at South Fortuna Elementary had been waiting for all year long. On Tuesday the children were able to try out their new playground for the very first time.
“I think it's really cool because we haven't had that much equipment since I started going to school here,” said third grader Jaiden Johnson.
It took the school’s PTA three years to plan and raise funds for the $40,000 play set. The new equipment was funded through grants from local community organizations like the McLean Foundation and the Fortuna Noon Rotary, as well as student fundraisers.
PTA members say the new playground was much needed to replace a lack of equipment and safe play options for the students.
“It was a very old structure, probably put in about 30 plus years ago and so there just wasn't a lot of things for them to access, things like slides,” said Angela Johnson, South Fortuna Elementary PTA President. “The spinny thing is obviously a huge attraction so we just wanted to give them something that they could play on and use on a day to day basis.”
