FPD K-9 unit will stay, thanks to community donations

FORTUNA- The Fortuna Police Department’s K-9 program has been saved, thanks to generous donations from community members.
Fortuna Police Sergeant Jason Kadle said, “It is a huge asset to the department, not just to use as a tool for law enforcement but as a bride to use for the schools and the kids in the community.”
The program started in 2006, but due to budget cuts in 2012 the program became donation-based. The only K-9 Officer, Zorro, is set to retire this summer after eight years of service. Kadle said if funds were not raised by the time Zorro retired, the program could have been cut. Recent donations however allowed the department to keep the unit, and purchase a new dog.
“It is great to see the community come together to help support such a great program,” he said.
Zorro is set to retire this summer and the new k-9 officer and handler will attend a training in the bay area within the next few months.
