Free tax help available for people on North Coast
Tax season is upon us, and people looking for tax help can begin that process with just one call.
More than 30 volunteer IRS Certified Tax Specialists will be able to do your taxes for free beginning on January 26th. People can start setting up appointments with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) Friday at 8 a.m. by dialing 211. There are 32 sites where people can meet the IRS Certified Tax Specialists between Garberville and Crescent City. 211 Humboldt officials say to leave a message with your name and phone number if they are too busy to take your call, and they will get back to you. They say VITA is an affordable alternative to using a company to do your taxes, which can cost up to $250.
"I think it's important that people get to keep the money that they've earned. They worked hard for it, they should get it all back and I see a lot of volunteers come in and that's exactly why they're doing the volunteering, because they want to help the community. So they're giving their time so that the community can keep as much money as they’ve earned," said Jeanette Hurst, the Coordinator of 211 Humboldt.
Taxes will be submitted to the IRS for approval before being officially turned in.
