Grand opening of Eureka Dog Park

EUREKA- It was a howling good time at the Eureka Dog Park with dozens of dog owners and their furry friends attending the grand opening.

Dog owner, Gwen Koenig said, “The vivaciousness and the friendliness of all the animals and all their owners all so together it just makes your heart swell. It’s a great place for the community to grow.”

Located on Watson Drive, the off-leash dog park in Eureka has been in the works since the mid-nineties. Volunteers say community members started looking for a site 10 years ago.

Larry McNeil of Open Space, Parks and Recreation Commission said, "The coastal commission wouldn’t allow it here and the fish and game wouldn’t allow it other places so this turned out to be a perfect spot although it took a lot of work to make it into a dog park."

The park was funded by donations and built in part by volunteers. The public can purchase tribute signs in order to help raise funds for future amenities at the park. The prices range from 50 dollars to 125 dollars. For more information on how you can purchase one, visit,

The park has an area for small dogs and an area for bigger dogs. The Secretary of the Eureka Dog Park, Amy Washburn said, "Dogs that are socialized with other dogs and other people are just friendlier, happier dogs.”

Dog owner, Jeff Lamoree said, "This is the greatest thing that’s happened to Eureka in a long time. We’ve been waiting it seems forever to get a dog park.”

The park is open daily from dawn until dusk.
