ARCATA- A four-month effort to improve a low-income housing apartment complex in Arcata is now in its final phase.
The Humboldt Plaza Apartments have been providing affordable housing to low-income families since 1970. In June, the organization began an improvement project, including replacing the siding on buildings, upgrading windows and lighting, and improving the playground. Tuesday was the groundbreaking for the new apartment office. Humboldt Plaza Corporation officials say the current office does not have enough space for staff to properly manage and assist residents. The new office is expected to be open in the spring.
"We would have built it before many years ago if we would of had the money. The main thing is to give the girls some space and make it easier for tenants to come in and have more than one tenant in the office at one time," said Cassius Smith, the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Humboldt Plaza Corporation.
