Groups want California officials to make labeling GMO's law
On the first day of the 2014 legislature, Californians For Genetically Engineered Food Labeling are calling on State Assembly Members and Senators to take leadership on, and enact legislation in 2014 to require labeling of genetically engineered foods. Polls show that Californians want to know if their foods contain GMO ingredients because of concerns about potential health risks and the rise of “super weeds.” Proponents say it it is due to the widespread use of GMO crops engineered to withstand heavy doses of herbicides.
Opponents say the labeling is too costly to manufacturers and will only raise the cost of food. Both sides agree the fight for this issue is far from over.
