EUREKA - A shooting Wednesday morning in west Eureka involved a stolen firearm and was accidental. Officers responded to reports of a man shot just before ten at a transient camp in the green belt area south of Del Norte Street. When police arrived, they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his leg.
“The male gave a story that went along the lines of he was walking with a female companion down here and suddenly a shot came out of nowhere, struck him. He doesn't know where it came from or who fired it,” Captain Steve Watson with the Eureka Police Department said.
Officers set up a perimeter and did a sweep of the greenbelt. They eventually discovered the campsite where the victim and his female companion had allegedly spent the night. Forensic evidence and statements from witnesses led them to determine the victim’s statement was a lie.
Eureka police say the victim and another man were inside the tent when the shotgun was accidentally fired. A total of four firearms were recovered from the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
