Harbor District discusses Redwood Dock developments
SAMOA- The Humboldt Bay Harbor District is one step closer in deciding the future developments on the Redwood Dock. At Monday’s Economic Development Committee meeting, both harbor commissioners and the public discussed future possibilities for the dock. Some ideas included a museum and a working railroad around the property; others had ideas to turn the dock into a boat ramp, an RV park, or to use it as storage for fisherman. The charge of the EDC is to explore economic development around Humboldt Bay, including maximizing profitability of Harbor District’s assets in a way that is compatible with the local community.
Currently, part of the 10-acre dock is being leased by the Timber Heritage Association and is also being used for aquaculture. The district received the dock from Simpson Timber in 2004. The property is adjacent to the town of Samoa and the Samoa Cookhouse and it was the subject of a business plan that envisioned a $30 million port facility, but capitalization for that project has not been available. Alternative potential uses, such as light industry and a maritime related small business incubator was discussed. The next public meeting one will be held Feb. 10 at Woodley Island Marina.
