Hiker rescued by Coast Guard off Lost Coast Trail
SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT: A hiker suffering from severe dehydration was rescued by the Coast Guard near Big Flat in Southern Humboldt.
Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay received a call around 7:30 this morning from Cal Fire saying that a female hiker was suffering from severe dehydration after becoming sick overnight. A helicopter was launched and arrived on the scene at around 9:30 am near Big Flat on the Lost Coast Trail about 8 miles north of Shelter Cove. Coast Guard personnel examined the woman and she was loaded onto the helicopter and taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Coast Guard authorities say the woman and her hiking party were very well prepared. They were traveling with radios and had emergency signaling devices on hand. They also marked several landing zones for the arrival of the helicopter. This effort greatly assisted the rescue.
Authorities remind all hikers to always carry a radio and/or cell phone With GPS, warm clothing and a first aid kit along with plenty of Food And Water. Always tell someone where you are going and when you are expected back.
