Homicide suspect Benjamin Carter arrested in Arizona
LAKE HAVASU CITY- The suspect in a fatal shooting in Garberville has been arrested in Arizona almost a month after the incident. U.S. Marshall Services arrested Carter Monday afternoon in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
According to Lt. Wayne Hanson of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department detectives received information that Carter was in the area. The detective then worked with a local US Marshals Services, who organized with Marshals in Arizona to locate him.
Lt. Hanson said the local police agency and the Marshals set up surveillance around the home they believed Carter was staying at, then identified him, contacted him, and arrested him without incident.
Carter is in Lake Havasu City awaiting extradition back to Humboldt County Jail where the investigation will continue.
Sheriff Michael Downey said he was relieved Carter has been arrested, because he feared he would victimize someone else. "There is a sense of closure to one part of this case," he said. Now, law enforcement officials have the chance to interview Carter if he complies and begin the judicial process.
