Hoopa man killed in SR 96 crash

HOOPA- A 43-year-old man is dead after being ejected from his vehicle. The California Highway Patrol said he was not wearing his seat belt.

The Humboldt County Coroner's Office has released his name as Gaylord Wayne Lewis Jr. of Hoopa. 

The accident happened on State Route 96 north of Shoemaker Lane at 11:20 p.m. Sunday. The man was driving a 1994 Ford pickup southbound when, for unknown reasons, he lost control and crossed into the opposite lane where he hit a guardrail.

He was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene.

Highway 96 was closed for 90 minutes and the accident remains under investigation by the CHP.
