Hoopa murder suspects pleads not guilty in court

EUREKA- The man accused of killing one and injuring two others in a Hoopa shooting March 22 plead not guilty in court Wednesday.

53 year old Rodney Ortiz of Willow Creek was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He also plead not guilty to five special allegations for using a firearm and causing great bodily injury, as well as possessing an illegal firearm with a previous felony conviction.

Ortiz is accused of shooting and killing 73 year old Daniel Peter Colegrove of Hoopa and injuring two other men on Redwood Grove Road. Ortiz fled the scene and was located the next day on West Henderson Street in Eureka. His bail is set a $3,325,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 7.

Rodney Ortiz's son, Vincent Ortiz was arrested Wednesday just after noon at the Patriot Gas Station in Willow Creek after law enforcement uncovered new evidence indicating he was an accessory to the crime. He was located with a 44 year old female. She is being questioned in Eureka. Ortiz's bail is set at $500,000.
