ARCATA - The HSU Forestry Department has almost reached it’s goal of $25,000 for the Gayleen Smith Scholarship Memorial Fund.

The scholarship began last year in honor of the beloved HSU Forestry Administrative Support Coordinator, Gayleen Smith. Two years ago she passed away from cancer but her passion for student success in the forestry department remains alive. The department gives a $1,000 scholarship each spring in her name and is only $5,000 away from it’s goal.

"Well the students all loved Gayleen and they wanted to do their part and so many students and student families have donated to the scholarship but they also felt that they could contribute by collecting and selling firewood, and so, rather than sell firewood, they're offering to give firewood as an incentive for donations to the Gayleen Scholarship Fund," said Pascal Berrill, Forestry Professor.

If you’re interested in firewood to support the scholarship, contact the HSU Forestry Department at 707-826-3935  or visit http://www2.humboldt.edu/fwr/giving
