SAMOA- A porta potty meant to help the homeless and protect the Samoa Dunes is now under fire.

Due to resident complaints, the harbor district is being asked to remove the porta potty from its current location on cookhouse road. According to those complaints, the facility is an attractive nuisance and many residents worry it could create an increase in area crime.

The harbor district placed the porta potty in Samoa last month. They are currently seeking legal council and are hoping to place an upgraded B&B near the Samoa Bridge instead.

“It's kind of sad. Trying to help clean the environment created some backlash in the community. That was not our intent at all,” President of the Humboldt Bay Harbor Commission Richard Marks said. “We were trying to do the best for the dunes as far as environmental stewards and we thought that this was just a small solution but hopefully this will still have the solution in place"
