EUREKA- A second candidate, Maggie Fleming of Arcata, announced her candidacy for District Attorney Wednesday in front of the Humboldt County Superior Court.

Fleming met with supporters, friends, and family to kick off her launch campaign. She has been serving 17 years as a Deputy District Attorney for Humboldt County and has a total of over 25 years of experience as a prosecutor.

As Deputy District Attorney she handled all levels of felony cases including prosecution of elder, sexual, child abuse crimes, drug cases, and murder. Fleming said she wants more consistency and efficiency in the office and believes in seeking justice, rather than only seeking to convict.

Fleming says the most effective way to prosecute is for one attorney to handle the case from the filing of the criminal charges through sentencing, which allows the prosecutor to have time to understand in detail the facts and legal issues of the case and to become familiar with key witnesses.

In her speech Wednesday she said crime prevention is essential and that the county needs to start looking at alternate ways to reduce the recidivism rate.
