Increase in car thefts in Arcata
ARCATA- There have been an increase in vehicle thefts throughout Arcata in the past month. A total of 17 vehicles have been stolen from different areas in the city.
All the cars that have been stolen are imported cars built in the 1990s said Det. Sgt. Todd Dokweiler. Police have no suspects at this time and have made no arrests.
Imported cars are the most commonly stolen vehicles. Dokweiler said the suspect is most likely using modified keys to access old worn door locks and engine ignition.
Cars have been stolen off streets and from driveways and have been recovered in neighboring towns, some without damages and others vandalized. Dokweiler said the suspects typically use them to get to their next locations or for joy rides.
