FORTUNA - Fortuna Police receive nearly two dozen calls after a IRS phone scam.
Monday, authorities say dozens of residents received calls claiming to be from the IRS complete with fake names and IRS badge numbers. The scammers claim you owe money. Some may even be able to recite the last four digits of a victims social security number. IRS toll-free numbers have been spoofed as well as emails. The fraudulent calls duplicate ambient call center sounds to make it sound authentic.
After these calls, there’s a follow up phone message from someone claiming to be from police or DMV wanting to verify the previous call. Law enforcement says if you do have back taxes, don’t fall for the scam.
To settle real back taxes, call IRS at 1-800-829-1040
