Kick-Off held in Eureka for National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive
EUREKA- In an attempt to “Stamp Out Hunger,” letter carriers kicked off the 22nd National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on Thursday at the post office on West Clark Street in Eureka.
Local politicians, political candidates and the District Representative for Congressman Jared Huffman came to the Kick-Off. More than one billion pounds of food have been delivered to food banks and pantries in the United States since food drive began. To donate, look for blue, biodegradable donation bags in your mailbox this week, place non-perishable food items in them, and leave them by your mailbox so letter carriers can collect your donations. You can also drop off donations at any post office. Food collected in Humboldt County will be delivered to Food for People on Saturday.
"This time of year is probably the most difficult time for the food banks. In the upcoming summer months is when most of the food stores dry out and so this is way to helping them to keep doing what they do so well to feed people the rest of the year until more food starts coming in around the holidays," said Dana Utman, the Branch President of the National Association of Letter Carriers for Branch 348.
If you would like to help sort and box the food when it is delivered to the Food for People Eureka location (307 W. 14th Street) on Saturday, you can call the Food for People’s Volunteer Coordinator at (707) 445-3166, ex. 310.
