Lafayette Elementary 1st school in Humboldt County to have Crossing Guard Pilot Program
EUREKA - In an effort to keep students safe, volunteer crossing guards received special training at Lafayette Elementary Thursday as a part of Humboldt County’s Safe Routes to School program.
The Redwood Community Action Agency and the California Highway Patrol, held the training session for 12 volunteer crossing guards. Due to safety concerns, Lafayette will be the first school in the county to implement a volunteer crossing guard program. An Active Transportation Grant is funding the training and also the construction of raised crosswalks on Park Street.
"Along with those infrastructure improvements, comes education and it's not just kids that need education. The community and parents need education as well. So by having crossing guards slowing traffic, enabling kids to cross the street, creating a presence. We're also going to be educating students about proper crossing techniques, about how to be safe as a pedestrian and hopefully teaching them lifelong skills," said Redwood Community Action Agency Senior Planner, Jenny Weiss
