Samoa - A large brush fire broke out near the Samoa Bridge Wednesday night.
Just after 7 p.m., Arcata Fire along with Samoa and Humboldt Bay Fire Departments responded to a large blaze just east of the Samoa Bridge off of Highway 255. Several abandoned buildings are in the area.
Officials say dealing with the fire was a challenge because no fire hydrants were nearby. Humboldt Bay and Samoa Fire provided water tenders but just as personnel would knock down an area, the offshore winds would re-ignite sections that were supposedly out.
The fire was officially contained just before 8 pm but mop up was to continue for hours and be monitored throughout the night. At this time the cause of the blaze is unknown and still under investigation.
