Longtime Samoa firefighter dies, served forty years with department
SAMOA- Longtime Samoa firefighter and community member Howard Ray Craig died last Friday after having served forty years with the department.
Craig joined the Samoa Fire Department during the 1960's before Fairhaven and Samoa fire departments merged into one. He was 85-years-old and actively served up until three years ago, when he then became a director on the Samoa Fire District board.
Not only did Craig play a vital role at the department but he also served his community by coaching both pee wee football and basketball in McKinleyville. Samoa Fire Chief Dale Unea was hired by Craig, and said if it weren't for him, he likely would not be where he is today,
"I used to jog by his house every morning, he is the one who hired me. He was the kind of guy who if you could call if you needed something, he will be missed.”
Craig passed away of a heart attack and is survived by his wife and five children.
