Low cost rabies vaccinations for dogs available in Humboldt County

HUMBOLDT COUNTY- The World Health Organization reports more than 50,000 people die of rabies worldwide each year, and that dog bites are the source of most of those cases.  Over the next two months, the local Veterinary Medical Association will hold Low Cost Canine Rabies Vaccination Clinics.

Veterinary officials say rabies vaccinations for dogs are usually about $20.  The cost of the vaccines being offered at the clinic is $6.  The Department of Health and Human Services Division of Environmental Health is helping spread awareness about the clinic, and officials say their goal is to get all cats and dogs in Humboldt County vaccinated for rabies.

"We don't know when an exposure may occur or where the virus may be present.  So we focus on the prevention measures that we can do.  And by vaccinating our pets, we make sure that their immunity is high when there is an exposure.  And the rabies virus could be present be anywhere throughout the county at any time," said Kevin Metcalfe, the Supervising Environmental Health Specialist for the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Environmental Health.

The first clinic will be held at the Petrolia Grange on Friday.  The Fortuna Animal Hospital will have a clinic on May 17th and so will the Broadway Animal Hospital in Eureka on the May 31st.  For more information, visit .
