Man allegedly burglarizes two Eureka homes Monday morning
EUREKA- A man is in custody following two separate burglary in progress calls to the Eureka Police Department on Monday morning.
The first call came in after 2:30 Monday morning from a home on the 1700 block of Sunny Avenue in Eureka. A woman was sleeping and woke up, finding a man in her kitchen who appeared to have a large knife in his pocket. Police say the man charged at her and she was able to go back to her bedroom with her small child, lock the door and call the 911. While authorities were processing that crime scene, another call came in after 3 a.m. The call came from the 1900 block of S Street, of a report of another burglary in progress. Later, 42-year-old Kevin Simpson was found hiding in brush nearby and was arrested on multiple charges. Officer Gary Whitmer with the EPD explains how Simpson was caught by the K-9 team and identified.
"They subsequently located a suspect from that track hiding in some bushes nearby. Along with locating the suspect, they found stolen property from one of the burglaries that associated him with the burglary. They detained that person and eventually had both victims positively identify that suspect, so they were able to confirm that that suspect was in both those houses," said Officer Whitmer.
