Man charged with armed robbery following reported shoplifting in Eureka
EUREKA- A transient man is charged with armed robbery and possession of heroin following a reported shoplifting at a department store in Eureka.
On Sunday, after 1:30 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to Kohl’s at Bayshore Mall. Employees told police that Jordan Steele shoplifted two pairs of sweat pants from the store. They told police that when they attempted to detain him in the parking lot, th he pulled out a fixed blade knife and threatened them with it. Steele was then seen running eastbound on Highland Avenue. Minutes later, Officer Greg Hill with the EPD found Steele on the 1300 block of Highland Avenue where Steele allegedly ran into the backyard of a residence. He was then detained and was found to be in possession of both pairs of sweat pants and less than a gram of heroin. He was charged with armed robbery as well as possession of heroin.
"When I told Mr. Steele that he was under arrest for robbery and for possession of heroin he began to cry and asked me if he was going to miss his mother's birthday. I asked him when his mother's birthday was and he said it was today and he informed me that he had gone to Kohl's to actually purchase a birthday card for his mother and that he had made the decision at that point after he purchased the card that he was going to steal the sweat pants. So he had actually purchased a birthday card for his mother and was arrested for robbery when he was on his way to give the card to his mother," said Officer Hill.
