Man in custody after standoff with police in Eureka
EUREKA- One man is in custody after a several hour standoff with police in Eureka.
The standoff started yesterday evening and ended early this morning. Police responded to a building on the 200 block of C Street at around 9 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a man shooting a gun outside an apartment window in Old Town. Police surrounded the building and made phone contact with the suspect, 27-year-old David Lee Geter. Geter eventually surrendered to police without incident just before 2 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. No one was injured during the ordeal, and officials used multiple strategies to resolve the situation.
"The officers identified where the shot came from, surrounded the building, tried to make contact with the person who did not reciprocate with that contact so we just used time, talk and tactics to try to slow things down and tried to get the person out and then at about two o'clock in the morning a person finally came out and talked to us and we took them into custody," said Chief Andrew Mills, the Police Chief of the Eureka Police Department.
