SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT- A woman visiting Humboldt was killed while kayaking on the Eel River.

According to the Sheriff's Office, 24 year old Samantha Dweck of Carlisle, Massachusetts drowned yesterday after getting trapped under the McCann Bridge.

Dweck was visiting with a running club. The group of 24 people were traveling down the river in kayaks and canoes. Dweck and a male occupant were traveling in a kayak when the vessel got stuck on a pillar under the bridge. According to the Sheriff's Office, because of the structure of the bridge, water underneath can get very swift and difficult to navigate. The kayak overturned, trapping Dweck underneath the canoe just before 9:45 a.m. Dweck was wearing a life vest.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, Cal Fire and the Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue responded. It took the teams nearly 3 hours to recover Dweck's body.
