McKay Tract Community Forest draws rally of support for second phase
EUREKA- A rally of people gathered outside of the courthouse Tuesday afternoon in support of the McKay Tract Community Forest. As Humboldt County received funding for the first phase of the project, many community members wanted answers about the second phase.
"I think we can all agree that including one of the most significant and beautiful second redwood grows that the McKay Tract has to offer is an important proponent of the community forest moving forward,” said a supporter.
The proposed community forest is within an unincorporated area of the county just southeast of Eureka. Green Diamond and the Trust Republic Lands approached the county to consider accepting ownership and responsibility of a portion of the property. Funding from both federal and state grants would cover costs of the first phase of the project, which includes around 1,000 acres. County officials said there is potential to gain another 400 acres within the next two years with additional funding.
The next project update is slated for early Jan. and an action on the proposed project could be reached at that time.
