McKinleyville teachers ask for pay increase
MCKINLEYVILLE- McKinleyville teachers hit the streets to picket against district officials Tuesday. The Teachers Association is requesting a five percent raise from McKinleyville Union School District.
President of the association, Mike Meng, said instructors have not received a raise in the past six years and said the raise is necessary to deal with the increased cost to benefits and the cost of living.
Superintendent, Michael Davies-Hughes, said the school district can not afford the pay increase without cutting programs for students. "We just don't feel like we can meet the teachers demands at this time," said Davies-Hughes.
Meng said the most important thing in schools are the teachers and need the most funding. "We feel teachers are the programs," said Meng.
